Imagine sitting outside your tent, hot brew in hand, as the afternoon sky turns eerie, temperatures drop, and the sun transforms into a razor-thin golden crescent right before sunset. On Wednesday, 12 August 2026, the UK will witness its deepest solar eclipse in over a decade. Over 90 per cent of the sun will be covered across the entire country, reaching up to 96 per cent in parts of the South West.

To make things even better for outdoor enthusiasts, the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower takes place just hours later under dark, moonless skies. It is setting up to be the ultimate camping and stargazing event of the decade.  


Whether you are prepping your camping kit, heading out with your local UKSN Charter, or setting up camp in the garden with the family, this guide covers everything you need to know about this rare cosmic event, how to view it safely, and how to get involved.

When and Where Will the Eclipse Happen?

The eclipse takes place during the early evening of 12 August 2026. Because the sun will sit low on the western horizon, you will not need to travel hundreds of miles to get a great view. You just need a clear view towards the west and northwest.  


The celestial event begins just before 18:10 BST, as the moon starts to bite into the sun's outer edge. Peak coverage occurs between 19:05 BST and 19:15 BST, depending on your location in the UK. The phenomenon finishes around 20:05 BST, shortly before the sun sets beneath the horizon. 


While the narrow path of total coverage passes through Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain, the entire UK gets front-row seats to an exceptionally deep partial eclipse.

At maximum eclipse, the sun will resemble an inverted crescent hanging low in the sky, casting long, unusual shadows across the landscape.

The Science Behind the Spectacle

A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes directly between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across our planet. Even though the sun is roughly 400 times larger than the moon, it is also about 400 times further away. This coincidence makes both objects appear almost identical in size from our viewpoint on Earth.  


During a partial eclipse like this one, the UK sits in the outer part of the shadow, known as the penumbra. Even with 90 per cent of the sun blocked out, the remaining 10 per cent of direct sunlight is still surprisingly powerful. Spectators will notice a distinct dimming of daylight, an immediate drop in air temperature, and strange behaviour from local wildlife as birds head to roost early thinking nightfall has arrived.  


Essential Safety Gear for Viewing the Sun

Looking directly at the sun without proper eye protection can cause permanent eye damage, even when 95 per cent of the disk is covered. Standard sunglasses, tinted glass, or dark plastics offer no protection against intense visible and ultraviolet light.

The most direct way to view the event is with ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses. These contain special filters that block 99.999 per cent of intense visible light and harmful ultraviolet rays. Always inspect the lenses to ensure they are free of scratches, tears, or pinholes before use.  



Traditional Bushcraft Projection

If you do not have eclipse glasses, simple kit from your pack can create an indirect viewer. Holding a metal colander or mesh cooking strainer with your back to the sun projects dozens of tiny crescent suns onto the ground below. Alternatively, you can poke a small hole in a piece of card and project the image onto a second white card held beneath it. Even the natural gaps between leaves in a tree canopy act as pinhole cameras, dotting the ground with crescent light patterns.


Optical Equipment Warnings

Never look at the sun through binoculars, a camera viewfinder, or a telescope while wearing eclipse glasses. The concentrated light acts like a magnifying glass and will instantly damage the filter and your eyes. Cameras, binoculars, and scopes require dedicated glass or solar film filters securely fitted over the front objective lens before alignment.

Once the sun sets around 20:45 BST, keep your camp chair out. As night falls, Earth passes through the dust trail left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, triggering the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower.


Because the moon is brand new on the night of the eclipse, the night sky will be super dark. Under clear skies away from light pollution, campers can expect to see up to 60 to 100 fast-moving shooting stars per hour, along with bright fireballs streaking across the sky into the early hours.

Your objective is simple: set up camp at a site, garden, or local wild spot with a clear western horizon on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. Safely observe the partial eclipse using an indirect projection method or certified glasses.


Take note of any unusual wildlife or farm animal responses around your campsite as darkness falls. Finally, stay up past nightfall to log at least five Perseid meteors before turning in, and share your notes and photos on the UKSN Facebook Group or WhatsApp Community.
