Project LoRa Revolutionising Off-Grid Communication for UKSN and it’s Members

At UKSN, we understand the importance of reliable communication, especially in off-grid or emergency situations. That's why we're excited to introduce Project LoRa. Utilising the cutting-edge open-source meshtastic platform, we are going to revolutionise how members stay connected in an emergency, and when off the grid.

How Does Project LoRa Work

Project Lora utilises affordable off-the-shelf hardware and open-source software to create decentralised mesh networks that allow devices to communicate directly with each other, without relying on traditional mobile networks or internet infrastructure. Each device acts as a node, relaying messages and extending the network’s reach, meaning the more nodes that are active, the further the network can communicate.

Using low-power radio modules, such as ESP32-based devices, members can send text-based messages, share GPS coordinates, and broadcast real-time locations across the mesh. Alongside this, we are developing an ATAK (Android Team Awareness Kit) solution for UKSN Charters, combining these technologies to unlock advanced situational awareness, offline mapping, and enhanced coordination tools.

All of this can operate without internet connectivity, making Project Lora particularly well suited to off-grid environments and emergency scenarios.
