Father’s Day isn’t just a date on the calendar – it’s a time to reflect on the dads, grandads, uncles, mentors and guardians who’ve helped shape who we are. At UKSN, where community, adventure, and self-reliance are part of everyday life, we see the impact of strong role models every day.
From teaching kids how to light their first fire, to setting up tents in the rain, to simply listening and leading by example, the father figures in our lives pass on more than skills – they pass on strength, patience, and a love of the outdoors.

The Power of Time Outdoors
In a world full of screens and noise, outdoor time has a unique power to bring people together. Walking through the woods, cooking over an open flame, or watching the stars with someone you love – these are the moments that matter.
For many families in the UKSN, the outdoors is where bonds grow strongest. A dad teaching his child to navigate with a map, a grandad showing how to identify edible plants, or a mentor helping a teen build their first shelter – these are the moments that stay with us.
These activities do more than entertain. They teach resilience, teamwork, and a deep respect for nature. That’s why so many UKSN members credit their love for the outdoors to a father figure who took the time to show them the way.
Leading by Example
At UKSN camps and Charter events, we see everyday heroes – men who carry the heavy rucksacks so the younger ones can keep up, who stay behind to tidy up camp, and who encourage others to try something new.
Fatherhood, after all, isn’t just about biology – it’s about presence. It’s about showing up. It’s about building fires, building shelters, and, most importantly, building character.
This Father’s Day, we want to honour those quiet leaders. The ones who guide with patience, offer wisdom without judgement, and create space for the next generation to grow.
Celebrate the UKSN Way on Father's Day
Looking for ways to celebrate Father’s Day with heart and meaning? Here are a few ideas that don’t cost much but create memories that last:
Go on a Wild Walk Explore a new trail, local woods, or your favourite green space. Bring snacks, take your time, and enjoy the conversations that only happen when you're outdoors.
Camp Out – Even at Home Can’t get away? Set up a tent in the garden. Cook over a firepit or portable stove. Tell stories and make it an adventure, wherever you are.
Create Something Together Whittle, carve, build or craft – making something by hand is a great bonding activity. Even something small like a paracord bracelet becomes a lasting keepsake.
Cook a Meal Outside Whether it’s breakfast in a pan or marshmallows on sticks, sharing food outdoors always feels special. Let the kids help – even if things don’t go perfectly, it’ll still be fun.
Write a Note Sometimes the most powerful gift is a simple message. A short, handwritten note thanking your dad or mentor for the little things can mean more than any present.
A Message to All UKSN Dads
To the men in our community who guide, teach, and lead – thank you. Your actions matter more than you know. You’re building more than campfires and shelters – you’re building memories, confidence, and connection.
So this Father’s Day, wherever you are – in the woods, by a fire, or simply at home with family – take a moment to reflect on the difference you’ve made. You are appreciated. You are valued.
Happy Father’s Day from all of us at UKSN.
