As the warmer weather begins to tighten its grip on the UK, it is more important than ever to ensure your vehicle is well-prepared for any unexpected situations. A breakdown in blistering heat can quickly become a serious concern, and having the right summer car essentials on hand can make all the difference between a minor inconvenience and a potentially dangerous scenario.

Ready for the Road? The Complete Summer Emergency Vehicle Kit Checklist for UK Drivers Feature Image

Whether you are commuting to work, heading out for a weekend bushcraft retreat, or driving to a UKSN event, having a summer-ready vehicle survival kit is essential.

Why is Emergency Vehicle Kit So Important?

Summer driving in the UK can be hazardous, with the Met Office regularly issuing yellow or amber weather warnings for extreme heat waves. Even with proper vehicle maintenance, accidents and breakdowns happen. Whether you are stuck on the M6 during a traffic standstill, facing engine trouble on a quiet country road, or simply navigating blistering city streets, it is crucial to be ready for the unexpected.

Beyond mechanical issues, summer also brings specific challenges like severe sun glare, expanding tyre pressures, and longer response times from breakdown services during peak holiday seasons. Therefore, having a comprehensive set of essentials can help keep you and your family safe and comfortable until help arrives.

Let us dive into the core summer car essentials every UK driver should have in their vehicle.

Orange Sun Hat

Lightweight Clothing and Sun Hats

In the event of a breakdown or an accident, you may need to wait a while for help to arrive. The average temperature in the UK during a heatwave can skyrocket, especially inside a stationary car without air conditioning. Staying cool and shielded from UV rays should be your top priority if you are stranded. Kit List

  • Sun hats: Wide-brimmed hats or caps are lightweight and incredibly effective at keeping direct sunlight off your face and neck.

  • Extra layers: Include items like lightweight long-sleeve cotton shirts, breathable trousers, and spare sunglasses. It is also a good idea to pack a clean change of clothes.

  • Cooling towels: Keeping a couple of evaporation cooling cloths in your kit provides much-needed relief when activated with a bit of water.

Water Bottles

High-Energy Snacks and Water

When you are stuck waiting for help, keeping your hydration and energy up is vital, especially if you are overheated or stressed. High-energy snacks can keep you going and help maintain your stamina.

Kit List

  • Non-perishable food: Granola bars, dried fruits, unsalted nuts, beef jerky, and hard protein bars are great options. These foods do not melt in a hot car and have a long shelf life.

  • Water: Carry at least 4 to 5 litres of drinking water. Reusable flasks are ideal, but consider having dedicated water jerrycans in the boot stored away from direct sunlight.

A handy tip for summer prepping: pack your water in insulated containers to prevent the liquids from absorbing plastic chemical tastes when cabin temperatures climb.

First Aid Kit

First Aid Kit with Electrolytes

Accidents can happen, especially in distracting driving conditions. A well-stocked first aid kit is essential for handling minor injuries on the spot. While many pre-made kits are available, you can also customise yours to include items tailored to summer-specific situations.

Kit List

  • Plasters and bandages: Essential for cuts, scrapes, and blisters from walking.

  • Rehydration sachets: Electrolyte powders to treat severe dehydration and heat exhaustion.

  • Antiseptic wipes: To clean wounds thoroughly before dressing them.

  • Sunscreen and aftersun: High factor SPF 50 and aloe vera cream to handle unexpected exposure or sunburn.

Make sure your first aid kit is easily accessible, ideally stored in your glove box or another secure location out of the direct sun.

Car Jump Leads

Jump Leads and Portable Car Battery Charger

Extreme heat can strain your car’s battery just as much as freezing winter temperatures. If you are stranded with a flat battery due to heavy air conditioning use or an electrical fault, jump leads are a must-have. However, for increased self-sufficiency, a portable car battery charger is invaluable. These devices allow you to restart your car without needing another vehicle to jumpstart you.

Kit List

  • Jump leads: Keep a quality set with at least 3m cable length.

  • Portable charger: These can also double as power banks for charging your phone or keeping emergency cooling fans running.

Windscreen Sunshade and Traction Aids

Getting stuck in soft ground, melting tarmac, or mud at a summer campsite is a common issue in rural areas. A heavy-duty windscreen sunshade keeps your cabin cool while parked, while traction aids provide the grip needed to get moving again if you slip off the beaten track. Kit List

  • Reflective sunshade: Compact and durable, this is ideal for blocking UV rays and lowering interior dashboard temperatures.

  • Traction mats: These can be placed under the tyres to help your vehicle gain traction in loose summer dirt, sand, or dry grass.

Flat Tyre with Pump

Tyre Care: Spare Tyre, Pressure Gauge, and Inflator

Tyre problems are one of the most common causes of breakdowns, particularly in summer when rising road temperatures cause air inside the tyre to expand rapidly. Ensuring your tyres are in top condition can help prevent punctures, blowouts, or flats, but sometimes even the best-prepared driver will find themselves with a problem. Kit List

  • Spare tyre: Always carry a spare tyre that is fully inflated and in good condition.

  • Tyre pressure gauge: In hot weather, tyre pressure can rise quickly and cause uneven wear or blowouts. Checking your tyre pressure regularly when tyres are cool is crucial.

  • Portable tyre inflator: A compact, battery-powered inflator can be a lifesaver if you have low pressure or need a quick adjustment after a puncture repair. Many models can plug into your car’s 12V socket.

Window Blinds and Screen Wash

One of the most frustrating parts of summer driving is dealing with blinding sun glare and a windscreen covered in squashed bugs. Every driver should carry window blinds and extra screen wash to maintain clear vision and keep passengers comfortable. It is unsafe to drive with limited visibility, and it is illegal in the UK to drive without a completely clear windscreen. Kit List

  • Rear window blinds: Useful for protecting children and pets in the back seats from direct glare.

  • Bug-removing screen wash: Essential for quickly clearing away highway grime and dust. Keep a pre-mixed bottle in your boot for easy access.

LED Torch

Torch and Spare Batteries

Summer days are longer, but breaking down late in the evening means you could still face the dark while waiting for recovery. A torch is essential not only for seeing what you are doing under the bonnet but also for making yourself visible to other drivers or roadside assistance. Opt for a reliable, water-resistant torch that can handle the elements.

Kit List

  • LED torch: LED torches are energy-efficient and provide a bright light. Keep spare batteries or consider a head torch.

  • Head torches: These are exceptionally handy, as they allow you to keep both hands free while checking your engine components or changing a tyre.

Emergency Warning Triangle

Emergency Warning Triangle and High-Visibility Vest

If your car breaks down, it is important to make yourself visible to other drivers to prevent further accidents. The UK Highway Code recommends placing a warning triangle at least 45 metres behind your vehicle if you are on a straight road. If you break down on a motorway, it is essential to pull over safely and call for help from behind the safety barrier rather than staying inside the hot vehicle.

Kit List

  • Warning triangle: This reflective triangle will alert oncoming traffic to the fact that you are stationary. It is essential on rural or unlit country roads.

  • High-visibility vest: Keep a hi-vis vest in your vehicle cabin for yourself and any passengers. In low-light conditions or dusty environments, this will help ensure you are visible if you need to step outside your car.

Multi-Tool

Multi-tool and Duct Tape

A good multi-tool is a versatile piece of equipment that can help with minor repairs on the go. Whether you need to cut a stubborn zip tie, tighten a loose hose clip, or use the screwdriver function, having one in your car kit is extremely useful.

Kit List

  • Multi-tool: Choose a model with various tools such as pliers, wire cutters, a blade, and screwdrivers. There are many compact options available, perfect for keeping in your glove box.

  • Duct tape: The ultimate quick fix, duct tape can be used to temporarily secure loose plastic trim, patch up a minor non-pressurised hose, or hold together a cracked wing mirror.

Phone and Power Bank

Phone Charger or Power Bank

Your phone is your lifeline in an emergency. You may need it to call for assistance, check digital maps, or contact family and friends. Ensuring that your phone is always charged should be a priority, especially since heat can cause phone batteries to drain or overheat rapidly.

Kit List

  • Car phone charger: Keep a charger that plugs into your car’s 12V socket or USB port.

  • Power bank: As a backup, carry a fully charged power bank. This ensures you have extra juice in case your vehicle’s battery is completely dead or you are resting away from the vehicle in the shade.

Socket Wrench

Basic Tools and Fluids

In addition to your multi-tool, carrying some basic tools and car fluids can be a real lifesaver, especially if you are stuck in an isolated rural area.

Kit List

  • Socket wrench and screwdrivers: Useful for minor mechanical adjustments.

  • Spare fuses: If a cooling fan fuse blows, having a spare can prevent your engine from overheating.

  • Engine coolant: Pre-mixed coolant is vital for topping up your radiator if it runs low due to high summer strain. Never open a hot radiator cap; wait for the engine to cool fully.

Fire Extinguisher

Fire Extinguisher

While it may seem unlikely, car fires can happen, particularly in hot weather due to overheating electrical systems or dry grass catching on a hot exhaust. A small, portable fire extinguisher designed for automotive use can help control a fire until emergency services arrive.

Kit List

  • Fire extinguisher: Look for a compact model that fits easily in your boot or under a front seat, rated for electrical and liquid fires.

Emergency Contact Information

Finally, make sure you have all relevant emergency numbers easily accessible. Save the phone number of your breakdown service provider and any emergency contacts on your phone. Also, consider writing them down on a laminated I.C.E card in case your phone battery dies from the heat.
