Sometimes life feels like it is rushing by. Between work, family, chores and screens, finding time for big adventures can seem impossible. But what if adventure did not need a plane ticket or weeks of planning? What if it could start this evening, right on your doorstep?
Welcome to the world of microadventures.

What Exactly Is a Microadventure?
A microadventure is exactly what it sounds like: a small, simple adventure that is easy to squeeze into everyday life. The term was popularised by British adventurer Alastair Humphreys, who realised you do not need to climb Everest to feel the thrill of the wild.
In simple terms, a microadventure is an outdoor experience that is short, local, low-cost and accessible. It could be a night under the stars in your back garden, a wild swim before work, a walk to a local hill to watch the sunrise, or camping overnight in a nearby woodland.
The beauty of microadventures is that they remove the excuses. There is no need for fancy kit or far-flung destinations. They are for anyone, anywhere, at any time.
Why Microadventures Matter
You might wonder if sleeping on a hilltop near your house is really worth the effort. But countless people have discovered that these tiny trips bring surprising benefits.
Reconnect with Nature: Even a few hours outdoors can reduce stress, improve mood and boost your connection with the natural world.
Break the Routine: A microadventure shakes you out of your day-to-day rut. You will come back feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the week.
Family Bonding: Microadventures are perfect for kids. Building a shelter in the woods or stargazing in a field beats another evening glued to a tablet.
Low Cost, High Reward: There is no need to spend on hotels or travel. Just pack a flask, a torch and a sleeping bag and you are set.
Build Skills: Wild camping, navigation, cooking outdoors. Microadventures are a fun way to grow your bushcraft and self-reliance skills, all while staying safe and close to home.
For UKSN members, microadventures tick every box. They are family-friendly, low-impact and a brilliant way to connect with fellow members through Charter meet-ups and local camps.
How to Plan Your First Microadventure
The best thing about microadventures is how easy they are to plan. Here is how to get started tonight.
1. Pick Your Spot
You do not need a national park. Look for a local woodland, a hill with a view, or even your own garden. Many UKSN Charters know great wild camping spots so check in with your local group if you are not sure where to go.
2. Keep It Simple
Start small. If you are new to sleeping outdoors, try a back garden campout. Next time, push a little further. A bivvy bag, tarp or small tent is all you really need. Bring a sleeping mat for comfort, a warm sleeping bag, and wear layers to stay snug.
3. Pack the Essentials
Do not overthink it. That is half the fun. A head torch, some snacks, plenty of water, a warm drink in a flask, and a simple stove if you fancy a brew.
Remember: Leave no trace. Pack out everything you bring in, and respect local land access rules.
4. Bring Company (or Go Solo)
Microadventures are brilliant for families, friends or solo explorers. If you are taking kids, make it fun. Toast marshmallows, tell stories, look for bats and listen for owls.
5. Make It a Habit
The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Try a once-a-month microadventure challenge. Invite other UKSN members or your local Charter. Before you know it, you will look forward to these mini escapes more than any fancy holiday.
Great Microadventure Ideas in the UK
Need inspiration? Here are a few ideas you could try this week.
Sunset to Sunrise Bivvy: Head to a local hill in the evening, watch the sunset, sleep out under the stars and hike home at dawn in time for breakfast.
River Dip: Pack a towel and head to a safe local river or lake for an early morning swim. Cold but invigorating.
Backyard Campfire: If you have a garden and it is safe, build a small fire pit!. Cook your tea over the flames and sleep outside.
Forest Hammock Night: Find a local woodland where wild camping is allowed or discreetly tolerated. Rig up a hammock between two sturdy trees, settle in and listen to the night-time sounds.
Urban Microadventure: Live in a city? No problem. Walk to a local park after dark, find a quiet bench or patch of grass, watch the stars and enjoy the city from a fresh perspective.
Staying Safe on a Microadventure
While microadventures are designed to be simple, a bit of care goes a long way.
Always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
Check the weather and dress for it.
Take a fully charged phone.
Stick to areas where you have permission to camp or bivvy.
Keep it respectful. Avoid disturbing wildlife and leave no litter.
UKSN members are always encouraged to use good judgement and share tips with each other. Many Charters run short overnight camps and local meet-ups where new members can learn from experienced ones.
Why Not Tonight?
One of the best things about microadventures is you do not need to wait for a holiday or a big budget. You can make memories on an ordinary Tuesday night.
Grab your sleeping bag, brew up a flask of tea and head out. Wake up with the dawn chorus instead of an alarm clock. Feel that spark of adventure we all crave, the one that is too often buried under to-do lists and screens.
When you get home, you will see that the world has not changed, but you have.
Microadventures and the UKSN Community
UKSN was built on the idea that self-reliance, adventure and community are for everyone, not just hardcore survivalists. Microadventures fit perfectly with this mindset.
Thinking of planning your own microadventure? Why not invite other UKSN members along? Many find that these small escapes grow into bigger friendships, skill-sharing opportunities and a deeper love of the outdoors.
Your Microadventure Challenge
Ready to break free from the routine? Here is a simple challenge for you.
Pick a night this week.
Choose your spot. Garden, local woods, riverside or hilltop.
Pack light but smart.
Go outside. Sleep wild. Wake up happy.
When you get back share your photos with the wider UKSN community. Inspire someone else to try their first microadventure. You never know where it might lead.
After all, adventure is not about distance travelled. It is about memories made. And sometimes the smallest escapes make the biggest difference.
