Leave No Trace: The UKSN Guide to Outdoor Ethics

Exploring the great outdoors is one of life’s most fulfilling experiences. At UKSN, we embrace the beauty of nature through camping, bushcraft, and adventure activities that connect us with the environment. However, as lovers of the wild, we bear the responsibility of preserving it for future generations. This is where the principles of Leave No Trace come into play.

Leave No Trace (LNT) is more than just a set of guidelines; it’s a way of life for anyone who cherishes the outdoors. It ensures that our actions in nature have minimal impact, allowing ecosystems to thrive unspoiled. In this guide, we delve into the seven principles of Leave No Trace, tailored to the unique landscapes of the UK, and explore how UKSN members can integrate these into their adventures.

Plan Ahead and Prepare

Preparation is key to a successful and responsible outdoor experience. Before embarking on an adventure, consider the following:

  • Research the area: Familiarise yourself with local regulations, weather conditions, and any restrictions in place. Many areas in the UK, such as national parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs), have specific rules to protect flora and fauna.

  • Pack smart: Bring appropriate gear and supplies, including reusable water bottles, containers, and eco-friendly toiletries. Avoid single-use plastics.

  • Group size: Limit your group size to reduce strain on the environment. UKSN Charters can help coordinate smaller, well-organised outings.

Careful planning not only ensures safety but also minimises the likelihood of causing unintentional harm to the environment.

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces

The UK’s landscapes are incredibly diverse, from rugged moorlands to tranquil woodlands. When travelling or camping, it’s crucial to tread lightly:

  • Stick to established paths: Avoid creating new trails, which can damage vegetation and disrupt wildlife habitats.

  • Choose durable campsites: Opt for areas with natural resistance to impact, such as dry grass or gravel. Wild camping in Scotland is legal with guidelines, but in England and Wales, you’ll need landowner permission.

  • Rotate sites: If camping in a large group, consider rotating where you pitch tents to reduce concentrated impact.

By following these practices, you’ll leave the landscape as pristine as you found it.

Dispose of Waste Properly

Litter is one of the most visible threats to the outdoors. Whether it’s a crisp packet or a stray bit of string, every piece of waste left behind can harm wildlife and ruin the experience for others.

  • Pack it in, pack it out: Carry all rubbish back with you, including biodegradable items like orange peels, which take much longer to decompose in the wild.

  • Toilet waste: Use designated facilities where possible. If not available, dig a small cathole 15-20 cm deep, at least 60 metres away from water sources, and cover it after use.

  • Recycle and reuse: Separate your waste for recycling when you return home and reuse items like containers and zip bags.

UKSN members often carry lightweight rubbish bags during trips to ensure they leave no trace.

Leave What You Find

The UK’s natural and historical heritage is irreplaceable. When exploring, resist the temptation to take souvenirs or alter the environment.

  • Respect nature: Admire wildflowers, but don’t pick them. Move rocks to study insects but replace them as you found them.

  • Cultural sites: Many UK trails pass by ancient ruins, stone circles, and historic sites. Leave these undisturbed so others can appreciate them.

  • Avoid marking: Carving initials or building structures like cairns can disrupt ecosystems and detract from the natural landscape.

Every footprint you leave behind should fade naturally over time, ensuring the wilderness remains as timeless as ever.

Minimise Campfire Impact

Campfires are a traditional part of the outdoor experience, but they can also be one of the most damaging. In the UK, many areas restrict open fires due to the risk of wildfires and habitat destruction.

  • Use camp stoves: Lightweight and efficient, camp stoves are a safer and more sustainable alternative for cooking.

  • Fire pits: If fires are permitted, use established fire pits and keep them small. Burn only locally sourced, dead wood.

  • Leave no trace: Ensure fires are fully extinguished before leaving and scatter cold ashes responsibly.

Whenever possible, opt for fireless activities like storytelling or stargazing to connect with your group and nature.

Respect Wildlife

The UK’s wildlife is diverse and vulnerable. Human interference, even unintentional, can disrupt habitats and feeding patterns.

  • Observe from a distance: Use binoculars to admire animals without intruding on their space.

  • Don’t feed wildlife: Human food can harm animals and alter their natural behaviours.

  • Secure food and rubbish: Store all food in airtight containers to avoid attracting animals.

By respecting wildlife, you contribute to the health of ecosystems and help maintain biodiversity.

Be Considerate of Others

The outdoors is a shared space. Whether hiking a popular trail or camping in a remote location, your actions impact others’ experiences.

  • Yield on trails: Give way to uphill hikers and be courteous when passing others.

  • Keep noise levels low: Enjoy nature’s sounds without disturbing others with loud conversations or music.

  • Share the space: If a site feels crowded, move on to avoid overloading the area.

The UKSN community thrives on mutual respect and cooperation, making every adventure a positive one for all.
