Within UKSN, we often talk about preparedness in the context of the outdoors, whether that is camping, bushcraft, navigation or simply being able to look after yourself when conditions change. Long-distance walking sits very comfortably within that mindset.

Thinking About the Camino de Santiago? Essential Preparation Tips for Your Pilgrimage (or Any Multi-Stage Hike) Feature Image

This article has been kindly written by UKSN member Gary Swift and is shared as a guest post in its original form, with only light formatting and supportive additions for clarity. It is based on real-world research and practical insights drawn from his recently published book:The Celtic Camino: Irish Pilgrimage From Bray to Dublin, focusing on preparation for the Camino or any similar multi-stage hiking journey.

Stepping onto the Ancient Path

Imagine a journey that begins with crisp coastal views, winds through historic paths, and ends at the legendary Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The Camino de Santiago is more than just a long-distance hike - it is a deeply transformative physical and spiritual milestone. There are many Camino routes, so whether you choose a classic route across Spain or start with a regional gem like the Celtic Camino in Ireland, arriving well-prepared is the key to unlocking the joy of every single step.

Physical Fitness: Start Where You Are

You do not need to be an Olympic athlete to walk the Camino, but it is undeniably a physical challenge. The secret lies in gradual, dedicated preparation:

Build Stamina Progressively: Begin training months in advance with short walks on flat terrain, slowly adding distance and introducing variable landscapes. Incorporate the Terrain: The Camino will treat you to everything from paved highways and cobblestones to muddy forest pathways and steep mountain grades. Practice walking hills early to build lung and joint strength. • Train with Your Pack: Never walk your first fully loaded mile on day one of your pilgrimage. Gradually add weight to your backpack during your training sessions so your shoulders and back adapt naturally.

Footwear and Foot Care: Your Most Vital Investment

Pilgrims walk the Camino on their feet, making footwear selection the single most critical decision you will make:

• Size Up for Swelling: Your feet naturally expand under the weight of a backpack and continuous mileage. Buy your trail shoes or walking boots at least half a size (or a full size) larger than your everyday shoes. • Say No to Cotton: Cotton holds moisture, which is the prime ingredient for blister formation. Choose high-wicking synthetic materials or Merino wool socks, which offer natural padding and antibacterial protection. • Listen to Your Body: If you feel a "hot spot" developing while walking, stop immediately. Applying paper surgical tape or a specialised blister plaster like Compeed immediately can save you from a disabling skin injury later.

Pro-Tip: While counter-intuitive to many hikers, non-waterproof trail runners or light boots are heavily favoured for summer Caminos. They breathe significantly better, keeping feet cool and sweat-free. If they do get soaked in a heavy rainstorm, they dry out infinitely faster than heavy, membrane-lined waterproof boots.

The Art of Smart Packing

A famous piece of Camino wisdom warns: "Don't pack your fears." Every single ounce in your pack must be carried for millions of steps, and heavy bags are the quickest route to fatigue or injury:

• Target Weight: Aim to keep your base pack weight around 6 kg to 7 kg (including water). Every item should be carefully weighed on kitchen scales during your selection process. • The Layering System: Opt for high-performance, thin layers instead of heavy single garments. Pack three pairs of synthetic or wool underwear, two pairs of zip-off lightweight cargo pants (which double as shorts), and three light base-layer shirts. Waterproof Strategy: A heavy-duty, full-coverage waterproof poncho that fits over both you and your backpack keeps both your body and your gear completely dry, preventing rain from soaking into your pack straps.

Logistics: Where Will You Sleep?

The infrastructure along the Caminos is incredibly supportive, offering a unique network of pilgrim accommodation known as Albergues:

• Municipal Albergues: Budget-friendly, clean, and run on a first-come, first-served basis. They provide a pure communal experience but do not accept advanced bookings or pack transfers. • Private Albergues & Guesthouses: Slightly more expensive but allow you to book a bed in advance. These are perfect for slow-paced walkers who want to eliminate the midday "bed race."

Why the Camino Fits the UKSN Mindset

At UKSN, we see the Camino mindset reflected in a lot of what our members already do: self-reliance, planning ahead, understanding your kit, and learning to operate comfortably outside of convenience. Whether it is a multi-day hike, a bushcraft weekend, or a full expedition-style camp, the fundamentals are the same. Your preparation determines your experience.
