On Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm, every compatible mobile phone and tablet in the UK will sound a loud siren-like alarm and display a message as part of a national test of the Emergency Alerts system.

This system is designed to warn the public about life-threatening situations such as severe flooding, extreme weather, or other large scale emergencies. The message will make clear that it is only a test, and no action is required.

What is the UK National Emergency Alerts system?

The Emergency Alerts system was introduced by the government to provide rapid warnings to people in areas at risk. These alerts are sent directly to 4G and 5G devices, ensuring the widest possible reach without needing to download an app.

The system has already been trialled in various regions, and this nationwide test will check that everything is working as it should.

What will happen during the test?

  • At 3pm on 7 September, your phone or tablet will:

    • Make a loud, siren-like sound.

    • Vibrate strongly.

    • Display a test message on the screen.

  • The sound and vibration will last for around 10 seconds.

  • You will not need to respond or take any action.

If your phone is switched off or in aeroplane mode, you will not receive the alert.

Why is this important?

For those of us in the UKSN community, the test is a reminder of the importance of preparedness and communication. In an emergency situation, this system could provide crucial information to help keep families safe. Whether you’re at home, on the road, or out camping with your local UKSN Charter, an alert could give you the time needed to react and protect yourself.

What should UKSN members do?

Although this is only a test, it’s worth using the moment to:

  • Check your devices – ensure your mobile data settings are up to date so your phone can receive alerts.

  • Talk to your family – explain what the alarm will sound like, especially to children who may find it startling.

  • Review your plans – think about how you would respond if the alert was real. Do you know where your nearest safe location is in a flood or storm? Does your Charter group have a way to check in with each other?

  • Test your comms – take the opportunity to check your UKSN radios, Project LoRa setups, or any alternative communication systems your group relies on.

  • Support vulnerable people – remind friends, relatives, or neighbours who might not be aware of the test.

This national test is also a good chance for UKSN members to practice together. Why not share your comms test results, lessons learned, or family preparedness tips with your Charter or on the UKSN Facebook Group? The more we share, the stronger our community resilience becomes.

Looking ahead

The Emergency Alerts system is just one part of the UK’s wider approach to resilience. For UKSN members, it sits alongside our own practices of bushcraft, self-sufficiency, and mutual assistance. By combining national systems with community-level preparedness, we can all be better equipped to face whatever challenges come our way.

Key takeaway: Expect your phone to make a loud alarm at 3pm on Sunday 7 September 2025. It’s only a test, but a valuable reminder to stay prepared.
