The UK government has quietly announced plans to run the biggest homeland defence simulation since the height of the Cold War. Dubbed Operation Albiston Shadow, this massive test scheduled for 2027 will see cabinet ministers, military personnel, and hundreds of public sector officials wargaming how the country would react to a sudden, coordinated hybrid attack.
At the same time, the Cabinet Office has dusted off and updated the highly classified government War Book, a strategic blueprint designed to transition the nation from a state of peace to war.
This is not a drill for the distant future. Later this year, the government is launching a national public awareness campaign urging British households to take small but important steps to prepare for major disruptions. They are talking about cyberattacks, extreme weather events, and infrastructure failures that could instantly wipe out your electricity, water, phone signal, and food supply chains.

What Exactly is the Government Planning?
The upcoming wargame is designed to test how resilient our infrastructure is to hybrid warfare. Unlike conventional battlefields, hybrid warfare takes place in the grey zone. Think massive cyberattacks disabling the banking system, sabotage of under-sea communications cables, water network contamination, or artificial intelligence being used to coordinate complex scams that cripple emergency services.
Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, explained that the national public campaign is intended to help the public prepare so that if an emergency strikes, emergency services can focus entirely on the most vulnerable.

Water is Your True Priority
A cyberattack on water treatment facilities could see taps run dry within hours. While stored water is a great starting point (aim for at least three litres per person, per day, for a minimum of three days), knowing how to purify water is a superpower. Stock up on gravity-fed water filters, purification tablets, and outdoor-grade survival filters.
Power and Heat Without the Grid
If the UK power grid takes a hit, you will want immediate backups. The "Off-Grid 24" Weekend Challenge
For one 24-hour period this month, we want you and your family to simulate a localised power and water outage.
The Rules: Turn off your main water valve and flip the main breakers to your home (or simply agree not to use any wall outlets or taps).
The Goal: Cook your meals, light your living spaces, stay warm, and keep entertained using only your existing camping, bushcraft, and emergency prep gear.
Share Your Journey: Take photos of your camp stoves, your candlelit board game sessions, and your water filtration setups. Post them to the UKSN Facebook Group, or WhatsApp community to inspire others and discuss what worked and what still needs improvement.
