If you aren't in the know, watt-hours represent the total amount of energy a battery can store, while watts denote the rate of energy consumption or production.

Conducting an Energy Audit

Before investing in a power station, it's absolutely essential to conduct an energy audit. This process involves calculating the total wattage (W) requirements of all the devices and appliances you intend to power. Here’s how you can do it:


  1. Identify Wattage Requirements: Make a list of all the devices you plan to use with the power station. Check the labels or manuals of each device to find their wattage ratings (W). For example, a small LED lantern might consume 5W, while a mini-fridge could require 60W.

  2. Calculate Total Watt-Hours (Wh): Once you have the wattage for each device, multiply the wattage by the number of hours you expect to use each device per day. Sum these values to get your total daily energy consumption in watt-hours.

  3. Account for Efficiency Loss: Power stations are not 100% efficient; some energy is lost during conversion and usage. As a general rule, deduct about 15% from your total watt-hours to account for these inefficiencies.

  4. Compare with Battery Capacity: Divide the adjusted total watt-hours by the watt-hours of the power station's battery to estimate how many hours the power station can sustain your devices before needing a recharge.


Example Calculation:

Let's say you have:

  • LED Lantern: 5W, used for 4 hours per day

  • Mini-fridge: 60W, used for 8 hours per day


Total daily energy consumption:

  • LED Lantern: 5W × 4 hours = 20Wh

  • Mini-fridge: 60W × 8 hours = 480Wh


Total daily consumption = 20Wh + 480Wh = 500Wh


Adjust for inefficiency (15% loss):

  • 500Wh / 0.85 (85% efficiency) = 588Wh


If your power station has a battery capacity of 1000Wh, it could power your devices for approximately 1.7 days (1000Wh / 588Wh = 1.7 days).


Understanding Voltage and Amperage

When assessing devices for your power station, you may encounter voltage (V) and amperage (A) ratings instead of or in addition to wattage.


To convert these values to wattage (W):

  • Watts (W) = Volts (V) × Amps (A)


For instance, a device rated at 12V and 5A would consume 60W (12V × 5A = 60W).

Consider these factors when selecting a power station:

  • Battery Capacity: Higher Wh means more energy storage.

  • Output Wattage: Ensure the power station can handle the peak wattage of your devices.

  • Portability: Weight and size matter, especially for outdoor use.

  • Charging Options: Look for flexibility in charging via solar panels, car adapters, or mains electricity.
