How Does the EcoFlow PowerStream Work?
At a very basic level, the EcoFlow PowerStream utilises solar panels that generate up to 800W of power. This power is then converted to 240V by the PowerStream Micro Inverter.
Here’s the innovative part: the electricity is fed into your house using a standard plug socket.... At least it is in Europe. Unfortunately due to legislation this is technically not permitted in the UK. To get around this, EcoFlow now supply both the original 240v plug, and a dedicated cable ready for an electrician to install on your behalf.
I Thought the PowerStream was a DIY Solution?
Essentially, its up to you how the PowerStream is installed within your home, but by including both plugs it relinquishes EcoFlow from any responsibility. If you do opt to use the original plug - be warned! It’s on you if anything goes wrong. With that said, endless people have safely used the original plug across Europe and even in the UK. Myself included…
Obviously i'm not condoning using the original 240v plug, but sharing the facts!
For those who already own a PowerStream and wish to update their setup to comply with the current rules, you can now get the replacement cable absolutely FREE by contacting EcoFlow direct.
Why is the PowerStream Referred to as a Balcony System?
In Europe, it's common to see small micro inverters like the PowerStream paired with solar panels placed on balconies, hence the term "balcony system." In the UK, however, most people will place the panels in their garden or any other space available. The term has stuck due to its origin and convenience in describing small-scale, residential solar setups.
What Will the EcoFlow PowerStream do for me?
The PowerStream will generate electricity that is 'streamed' into your house via your existing wiring, helping to offset your electricity bills by utilising the 800W of power generated by the solar panels. This can save you up to 1/3 off your electric bill. Additionally, the PowerStream can directly charge your EcoFlow Delta during the day, allowing you to use this energy when demand is high or during the night.
For those with an EcoFlow River, you can connect it to the PowerStream, but you can only transfer 100W. This is why I personally cant recommend the River as a viable solution, plus it will need to be fed with its own solar panel, or be recharged manually. Moreover, connecting EcoFlow Smart Plugs to the PowerStream unlocks extra functionality, such as remote device control and real-time energy consumption monitoring, which helps in efficient energy allocation.
Benefits of the EcoFlow PowerStream
0% Energy Wasted: Excess energy is stored in a portable power station during the day and used when needed, providing significant savings on energy bills.
Power Through the Night: The stored energy can be used to meet your electricity demands during peak times, reducing reliance on the grid.
Smart Energy Management: With the EcoFlow Smart Plugs and App, you can monitor and control your energy usage efficiently, optimising both savings and convenience.
What Accessories Come Included With the PowerStream?
The PowerStream comes with a rich selection of accessories to get you started:
1x EF BKW solar cable (MC4 Splitter Cable allowing you to connect two separate solar arrays up to 400W each)
1x EF BKW AC cable (Power cable)
1x Protective cover
1x Cable puller
1x Mounting bracket
1x Bag of screws, bolts, etc.
Quick start guide, warranty info, etc.
What Extra Accessories Do I Need to Get Started?
Depending on your personal circumstances, you might need additional cables and accessories:
EcoFlow BKW-Battery Cable
If you want to connect your River/Delta, you'll need this cable! There are three different types available, each suited to a specific EcoFlow power station.
Flat MC4 Cable
Flat MC4 cables help avoid drilling and allow you to install through the cracks of windows and doors. You receive a pair in the box, so you'll need two boxes if you want to install two individual panels.
Solar Extension Cable
Each set is 3m long and comes with two cables. You'll likely need at least two sets—one for each solar array and potentially two more for inside your house if the distance between your PowerStream and the Flat MC4 Cables is more than 2 meters.
Solar Panels
The PowerStream can handle two separate 400W solar arrays. Ensure all your panels combined don't exceed 55V DC. You can also over-panel for cloudy days, but the total generation will cap at 800W.
EcoFlow Smart Plugs
These allow you to turn devices on/off remotely, monitor appliances' energy consumption in real time, and automate the PowerStreams energy allocation.
EcoFlow Power Station
To maximise the PowerStream’s potential, you need an EcoFlow Delta, although you can use a River with some limitations.
Installation and Usage Tips
Safety First: Always follow local regulations and consider hiring an electrician for wiring to ensure safety and compliance.
Optimal Placement: Position your solar panels in the sunniest spot available, whether it’s a garden, terrace, or wall. Ensure they are free from obstructions like trees or buildings.
Monitor Performance: Use the EcoFlow App and Smart Plugs to monitor your energy usage and make adjustments as necessary.
Maintenance: Regularly clean your solar panels to ensure they are free from dust and debris, which can impact their efficiency.
Common Questions and Answers
Q: What happens if I pull the PowerStreams plug out of the wall? Will it be live?
A: The PowerStream monitors the frequency generated by the grid. If it no longer detects this frequency, it cuts out to prevent electrocution.
Q: What solar panels can be used with the PowerStream?
A: The PowerStream has two controllers, each handling 400W at 11-55V (13 amp). Any solar panels within this voltage range are suitable, and it's recommended to use panels with MC4 connectors for easy installation.
Q: Can I use the PowerStream without a River/Delta power station?
A: Yes, the PowerStream can operate independently, but you'll lose key functionalities such as storing electricity or supplementing your power requirements with a Delta during the evening.
Conclusion
The EcoFlow PowerStream is a versatile and efficient way to harness solar energy and reduce your electricity bills. By understanding how it works and utilising the available accessories and smart features, you can maximise your energy savings and enjoy greater energy independence.
Although not directly EcoFlows fault, we are unable to give the PowerStream a 4 star rating as the device is technically no longer plug and play (unless you ignore the legislation). Does that make it any less of a great device? Absolutely not! In fact, it still comes highly recommended.
