UKSN Recon Build Series: Turning a Ford Ranger Wildtrak into an Off-Grid Expedition Machine
The secret is officially out! As part of the UKSN Recon project, we have launched one of our most ambitious builds to date. The team is building a full-spec, off-grid overland rig designed to tackle remote trail runs, support social camps, and assist UKSN Charter operations up and down the country.

Here is the best part: UKSN founder Glyn has bought this vehicle out of his own pocket to kickstart the project. Beyond that, we are bringing on board fantastic industry partners who will hopefully be helping fund and support the build along the way by sending out gear, parts, and hardware for us to test, modify, and review in real-world conditions.

We will be updating this article regularly as the build progresses, sharing practical technical advice, hard-earned installation lessons, and direct links so you can source similar kit for your own setup.

Why the 2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak Is the Ultimate Overland Canvas
Choosing the right foundation for an overlanding rig is crucial. You need something reliable, highly capable off-road, comfortable for long road trips, and tough enough to haul serious gear.
Enter Glyn’s choice for the project: a frozen white 2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrak.
The Ford Ranger has earned a massive reputation across the UK outdoor scene for very good reasons:
Towing and Payload Capacity: Excellent pulling power and a generous rear bed capacity make carrying heavy tents, water tanks, and recovery kit completely effortless.
All-Terrain Performance: The selectable 4WD system, strong ground clearance, and low-range gearbox handle wet green lanes, muddy camp fields, and rocky tracks with ease.
Endless Aftermarket Accessories: Because the Ranger is one of Britain's most popular pick-up trucks, the aftermarket support is huge. From roof racks and bed canopies to heavy-duty suspension upgrades, finding compatible kit is straightforward and budget-friendly.
Everyday Comfort: The Wildtrak trim delivers fantastic modern cabin comfort, meaning long highway journeys to UKSN events and Charters are completely stress-free.

Starting Ahead of the Game: Essential Mods Already Installed
Building a custom expedition truck from scratch takes serious time and money. Luckily, Glyn scored big with this base vehicle, as it came pre-fitted with several top-tier modifications that saved both time and cash right out of the gate:

Black Raptor Alloys & General Grabber AT3 Tyres: The General Grabber AT3s deliver an ideal balance between deep off-road grip and quiet tarmac cruising. Paired with aggressive black Raptor wheels, they look top-tier and handle unpredictable UK weather with confidence.
Wheel Spacers: Giving the truck a wider stance, these enhance lateral stability on uneven ground while providing that muscular off-road profile.
Colour-Coded White Wheel Arches: Extended flare arches painted in matching frozen white ensure the wider wheel package sits completely flush, keeping the setup fully road-legal while controlling mud spray.
Full De-Chrome Styling Pack: The standard brightwork was replaced with sleek black side vents, black door handles, and protective front and rear light covers for a sleek, tactical finish.
Aggressive Raptor Front Grille: Replacing the factory front fascia, this bold front end gives the truck massive trail presence.
Black Mirrors with Smoked Indicators: Perfectly matching the blacked-out theme across the rest of the bodywork.
Black Window Wind Deflectors: Ideal for cracking the windows for airflow during damp overnight stays without letting rain seep into the cab.

The Recon Vision: What We Are Building Next
Glyn and the team aim to turn this Wildtrak into a fully self-contained, off-grid mobile basecamp.
Over the coming weeks, months, and quite possibly years - as parts arrive from partners and get installed, we will be adding:
A Heavy-Duty Canopy: The base for the roof tent and massively increased storage potential.
A Roof Tent Setup: Fast, elevated shelter that sets up in minutes, keeping you high off the cold, wet ground.
A Built-In Field Kitchen: Slide-out gas cooker, onboard cooking gear, and dedicated food preparation space for feeding the team out in the field.
Off-Grid Solar & Aux Power: High-efficiency solar panels paired with a dual-battery system to keep fridges running, communications charged, and campsite lights powered indefinitely.
Integrated High-Lumen Auxiliary Lighting: Front spot lighting, perimeter scene lights, and camp floodlights to ensure safe night-time navigation and easy late-arrival camp setups.
Recovery Gear & Practical Storage Solutions: Secure, quick-access storage units packed with essential equipment for mutual assistance tasks and field support.
