The 5 C's of Survival: Essential Skills for Every UKSN Member

When it comes to outdoor adventures, bushcraft, or prepping for unforeseen situations, understanding the basics of survival can make all the difference. At UKSN, we pride ourselves on equipping our members with the knowledge and tools to thrive in the great outdoors and to support one another through Charters (mutual assistance groups). Whether you’re a seasoned camper or just starting your journey, mastering the 5 C's of survival is fundamental. These five categories form the backbone of any well-prepared survival kit and strategy, and they are as relevant to a weekend camping trip as they are to long-term self-sufficiency.

What Are the 5 C's of Survival?

Coined by survival expert Dave Canterbury, the 5 C’s of survival represent the essential items and skills necessary for enduring and thriving in challenging outdoor conditions. They include:

  1. Cutting Tools

  2. Cover

  3. Combustion Devices

  4. Containers

  5. Cordage

Let’s break these down and explore their relevance to UKSN members, with practical advice for their use in the British countryside.

Cutting Tools

A reliable cutting tool is indispensable in any survival scenario. Knives and multitools are versatile pieces of kit that serve a multitude of purposes, from food preparation to crafting shelter and making firewood.

Choosing the Right Knife

When selecting a cutting tool, UK laws must be adhered to. Opt for a fixed-blade knife with a blade length under 3 inches, or consider folding knives that meet legal requirements. Key characteristics to look for include:

  • Durability: High-carbon or stainless steel blades are best.

  • Versatility: A drop-point blade design works well for bushcraft tasks.

  • Ease of Maintenance: Look for blades that are easy to sharpen and rust-resistant.

Uses in Survival

  • Preparing kindling and shaving tinder for fires.

  • Cutting rope and cordage for shelter building.

  • Processing food, such as filleting fish or cutting meat.

UKSN Tip: Always carry your cutting tool responsibly. Use it only in appropriate settings and store it safely when not in use.

Cover

Protection from the elements is critical for maintaining body temperature and staying safe in the outdoors. Hypothermia is a serious threat, even in the mild British climate.

Shelter Options

  • Tarp: Lightweight and versatile, tarps can be pitched in numerous configurations, making them a favourite among bushcrafters.

  • Tent: A more robust option for camping trips or group outings.

  • Emergency Blanket: Compact and effective for retaining body heat.

Setting Up Shelter

Ensure your shelter is set up in a safe, sheltered location away from potential hazards like falling branches or flood-prone areas. Make use of natural features like trees and hillsides for added protection.

UKSN Tip: Practise setting up your shelter in different environments to build confidence and adaptability.

Combustion Devices

The ability to create fire is a cornerstone of survival. Fire provides warmth, a means to cook food, purify water, and signal for help.

Fire-Starting Tools

  • Ferrocerium Rod: A durable and reliable fire starter that works in wet conditions.

  • Waterproof Matches: Handy backups for emergencies.

  • Lighters: Lightweight and convenient, though less reliable in bad weather.

Techniques for Fire Building

  1. Gather Materials: Collect tinder (e.g., dry grass, bark shavings), kindling (small twigs), and fuelwood (larger logs).

  2. Structure: Arrange your fire using a teepee or log cabin design.

  3. Ignite: Use your combustion device to ignite the tinder, then gradually add larger pieces of wood.

UKSN Tip: Always practise Leave No Trace principles when building and extinguishing fires. Avoid starting fires in sensitive areas and ensure they are fully extinguished before leaving.

Containers

Containers allow you to transport and store water, food, and other essential items. Hydration is particularly crucial, as even mild dehydration can impact your physical and mental performance.

Types of Containers

  • Metal Bottles: Ideal for boiling water to make it safe for drinking.

  • Collapsible Containers: Lightweight and space-saving, perfect for longer trips.

  • Cooking Pots: Serve dual purposes for preparing meals and purifying water.

Water Purification

In the UK, streams and rivers often contain contaminants. To ensure safe drinking water:

  • Boil water in your container for at least one minute.

  • Use water purification tablets.

  • Invest in a portable water filter like a Lifesaver Bottle.

UKSN Tip: Always carry a backup water source, such as a filled bottle, in case you cannot find a natural water supply.

Cordage

Cordage is a versatile tool for survival tasks such as building shelter, fishing, and securing gear. Having strong and reliable cordage in your kit can significantly expand your problem-solving options.

Types of Cordage

  • Paracord: Lightweight, strong, and multifunctional.

  • Natural Fibres: Useful for bushcraft and traditional knot-tying techniques.

  • Heavy-Duty Rope: Ideal for more demanding tasks like hauling heavy loads.

Practical Applications

  • Securing tarps and tents.

  • Crafting tools and traps.

  • Repairing gear, such as broken straps or torn clothing.

UKSN Tip: Learn basic knots like the bowline, clove hitch, and taut-line hitch to make the most of your cordage.

Bringing It All Together

While the 5 C's of survival focus on essential tools and skills, they also promote a mindset of preparedness and adaptability. At UKSN, we encourage members to practise these skills regularly, both at home and during our events and camps. Building confidence in using cutting tools, setting up shelters, starting fires, purifying water, and utilising cordage ensures that you’re ready to tackle any challenge the great outdoors may present.
