Outdoor Adventures Made Easy with the Kelly Kettle

The Kelly Kettle is hands down our favourite piece of outdoor gear. This kettle ingeniously combines traditional design with the efficiency of a jet stove, rapidly heating the water chamber. In todays blog article we explore the various models, accessories, and why I personally consider it one of the best outdoor stove/kettle combos available.

Rating: ★★★★ (4/4)

Kelly Kettle Main Features

  • Fast, safe and eco-friendly

  • Fuel with sticks, leaves, pine cones, or practically anything else you can scavange

  • Capacity: 1.6L (Base Camp), 1.2L (Scout), 0.6L (Trekker)

  • Steel & Aluminium versions available

  • Lots of available accessories

Kelly Kettle Model and Capacity

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of testing the largest model, the 'Base Camp,' which is impressively sizeable. The Base Camp model can boil up to 1.6 litres of water, making it a perfect choice for group outings, or UKSN Charters who want to have hot water on hand at all times. There are two additional smaller models available for those who need less capacity including the Scout (1.2L) and Trekker (0.6L).

What truly sets the Kelly Kettle apart is its rapid heating capability; it can boil water in about five minutes, which is remarkable for a device that operates on twigs.

Kelly Kettle Base Camp Ultimate Kit Accessories

Along with the kettle, I tested the Base Camp Ultimate Kit, which includes a versatile Cook Set, Pot Support, Hobo Stove, Cup Set, and carry bag. This comprehensive set enhances the kettle's functionality, allowing it not only to heat water but also to cook food. The Hobo Stove, in particular, is an adaptable component that makes the kit a full-fledged outdoor cooking solution.

Material Options

I personally opted for the durable stainless steel version of the Kelly Kettle. While slightly heavier than the aluminum model, the stainless steel variant offers greater durability and is less likely to dent, making it highly recommended for group use. Although the aluminium model is lighter and more compact, ideal for activities where weight is a premium, the robust construction of the stainless steel version makes it perfect for a wide range of outdoor activities.

Performance in the Field

During testing, the Kelly Kettle performed admirably as expected. Despite the damp British climate, it is easy to get a fire going using small sticks. I'm always impressed by how quickly it boils water. Its simply incredibly efficient for outdoor use.

Kelly Kettle Roaring

Blaze and Roar: The Kelly Kettle in Action

One of the most striking features of the Kelly Kettle is the voracity of the air it sucks through the chimney, creating what looks like an afterburner on a jet. At night, this effect is particularly stunning, as the flames roar and the kettle glows, providing both light and a little warmth. The visual and auditory experience of the Kelly Kettle in full operation adds a dramatic flair to any camping setup.

Cooking Capabilities

The Hobo Stove aspect of the Ultimate Kit was only recently put to the test, and it proved to be very effective. We used it to heat some soup, and despite the need for regular feeding of small sticks to maintain the fire, the results were excellent. The Pot Support also allows for simultaneous water heating and cooking. While the design could benefit from slight adjustments to improve stability, it remains a highly functional addition to the kit.

Suitability for Various Activities

The Kelly Kettle itself is beautifully made, offering a distinctive and functional centrepiece for any camp setup. It is not ideal for mountaintop excursions due to its bulk and the need for dry fuel, but it shines in environments where carrying weight isn't a primary concern and sticks are plentiful.

Comparison with Other Stoves

When comparing the Kelly Kettle to other wood-burning stoves like the Storm Kettle and the BioLite, it holds its own admirably. The BioLite offers the added feature of charging gadgets, catering to a tech-savvy audience, but the Kelly Kettle’s simplicity and effectiveness make it a reliable choice for traditional outdoor cooking. The Storm Kettle, while similar, doesn't offer as many accessories, making the Kelly Kettle a more versatile option.

Conclusion

In summary, the Kelly Kettle is a fantastic addition to any outdoor enthusiast's gear. Its quick boiling time, range of accessories, and robust construction make it a standout option for those seeking a versatile and efficient outdoor cooking solution. Whether you're planning a fishing trip, a picnic, or a car camping adventure, the Kelly Kettle will not disappoint. It’s a cool talking point and a highly functional tool that enhances any outdoor experience.

UKSN Platinum Tried and Tested Award

The Kelly Kettle is unanimously our favourite piece of kit. Its efficient, well constructed, competitively priced, and is stunning to watch in the dark. If you can only buy one new piece of kit this year, buy a Kelly Kettle. You wont regret it!

I would agree with this! Best bit of kit we have for group camps and it's the thing that is hands down used the most! We probably have 6 of them between the group in all different sizes.
