You are packed for the weekend, your gear is sorted, and your favourite bushcraft blade is tucked neatly into your pack or clipped to your belt. You are ready to head out into the great British countryside for some classic outdoor skill-building, camp cooking, and fresh air.

But here is a chilling thought: that trusty tool in your pocket could technically land you a hefty fine or a prison sentence before you even reach the campsite.

Is Your Everyday Carry About To Get You Arrested? A Guide To UK Knife Law For Outdoor Addicts Feature Image

Navigating the legal landscape of bladed articles in the UK can feel like walking through a thicket of brambles blindfolded. With rules constantly updated under recent legislation, staying on the right side of the law is absolutely vital for any responsible outdoor enthusiast.

Let us cut through the confusion and break down exactly what you can carry, what you cannot, and how to keep your weekend adventures completely stress-free.

The Golden Rule: Everyday Carry vs. Good Reason

In the UK, the law splits knives into distinct categories based on where you are and how the knife functions. The biggest distinction to understand is what you can carry anywhere without a specific excuse, versus what requires a solid explanation if you are stopped by the police.

UK Legal Pen knife

The UK Friendly Everyday Carry (EDC)

You are legally allowed to carry a pocket knife in a public place without needing any excuse or good reason, provided it ticks two strict boxes simultaneously:

  • It must be non-locking: The blade must fold freely at all times. If it has a button, catch, sleeve, or mechanism that locks the blade open, it is not an EDC knife.

  • The cutting edge must be 3 inches (7.62 cm) or less: This is measured along the actual sharp cutting edge, not just the physical length of the metal piece.

The standard slip-joint multi-tool or a classic, small red Swiss Army knife are perfect examples. You can have these in your pocket while walking down the high street or heading to the shops.

Mora Fixed Blade Knife

Lock Knives and Fixed Blades

This is where many outdoor folks get caught out. A lock knife, even one with a tiny 2-inch blade, is treated exactly the same as a massive fixed-blade survival knife under UK law.

Because the blade locks into place for safety, it cannot be classified as a folding pocket knife. Therefore, carrying a lock knife or a fixed blade in public without a good reason is a criminal offence.

What Counts As A Good Reason For UKSN Members?

If you are carrying a fixed-blade knife or a locking tool to a UKSN Charter camp, an official meet, or a private woodland for an outdoor activity, do you have a leg to stand on?

Yes, you do. The law recognises valid exemptions for hobbies and trades, including:

  • Using a knife or tool directly for work purposes (like a carpenter or farmer).

  • Carrying a blade as part of an official national costume or for genuine religious reasons.

  • Engaging in legitimate outdoor activities like bushcraft, camping, scouting, or fishing.

However, context is everything. If you are stopped on a public footpath with a full bushcraft kit, cooking gear, and a rucksack on your way to a woodland site, your reason is clear and consistent.

If you leave that same fixed-blade knife in your glove box or at the bottom of your backpack when you stop off at a petrol station or a town-centre pub on the way home, your good reason vanishes in the eyes of the law.

Smart Knife Transport: How To Cover Your Assets

To ensure you never fall foul of the regulations, adopt a strict protocol for transporting your tools:

Action

Why It Matters

Out of Sight, Out of Reach

Never carry fixed blades or lock knives on your belt or in your pockets while driving or using public transport. Pack them deep inside your rucksack or kit bag.

Boot It

When driving to a UKSN event or a camping trip, store your tool bag or knife case securely in the boot of the vehicle, completely out of reach of the driver and passengers.

Keep It Wrapped

Use proper sheaths, guards, or tool wraps. Keeping your blades securely bundled with the rest of your camping gear demonstrates that they are being carried as tools for a specific destination, not as accessible weapons.

Never carry any knife with the intention of using it for personal protection. Self-defence is never accepted as a valid reason in the UK and will result in immediate asset seizure and potential prosecution.

Outright Banned Blades: Keep These At Home

Some bladed items are completely illegal to own, possess in private, buy, or bring into the country. The prohibited list includes:

  • Flick knives, switchblades, and automatic knives.

  • Butterfly knives (balisongs) and gravity knives.

  • Disguised knives (like blades hidden inside belt buckles or pens).

  • Zombie-style knives or machetes with specific tactical features (like holes, spikes, or serrations).

Stick to traditional, high-quality outdoor tools from reputable suppliers, and you will stay well clear of the prohibited items list.

Being a responsible member of the outdoor community means knowing your gear inside out. Let us put your kit to the test this week.

Your Challenge: The Safe & Secure Toolkit Audit

  1. Gather the main fixed-blade knives or locking tools that you regularly pack for UKSN events and outdoor camps.

  2. Inspect your current storage setup for these specific tools: do you have secure sheaths, locked hard cases, or designated tool wraps for them?

  3. Review your transport routine to ensure these blades are packed away correctly, deep within your main rucksack or kit boxes.

  4. Leave a comment below or drop a message in the UKSN WhatsApp Group to share your best tip or favourite piece of kit for keeping your main bushcraft tools safely stored and separated from your everyday items while traveling.
