Winter in the UK brings crisp mornings, cosy nights, and, unfortunately, a spike in colds, flu, and Covid cases. Whether you’re heading out for a winter bushcraft session, a family camping trip, or simply braving the commute, staying healthy is crucial.
At UKSN, we believe in being prepared not just for the outdoors but for the health challenges winter can throw at us. Here are five simple, practical ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from winter illnesses.

Prioritise Hand Hygiene
It sounds basic, but proper handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of viruses. Wash your hands regularly with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds. If you’re outdoors or on the move, carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser. Encourage children to make it fun - sing a short song while scrubbing to make sure they wash long enough.
Keep Your Immune System Strong
A strong immune system is your best defence. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps. Don’t underestimate the power of vitamin C from oranges and leafy greens, or zinc from nuts and seeds. Staying hydrated is equally important - herbal teas and water throughout the day keep your body ready to fight off infections. Adequate sleep and regular, moderate exercise, like woodland walks or winter hikes, also play a big role.
Get Vaccinated
Flu and Covid vaccines remain a highly effective way to protect yourself and others. Check your local NHS guidance for the latest vaccine availability. Vaccination not only reduces your risk of severe illness but also helps protect vulnerable family members and fellow UKSN members during group events or Charters.
Mind Your Environment
Viruses spread more easily in crowded, enclosed spaces. When possible, keep rooms well ventilated, especially during gatherings. If you’re camping or enjoying outdoor activities, embrace the fresh air - spending time outdoors is not only safer but also boosts your mood and overall health. Even simple practices like opening a window at home or avoiding overly crowded indoor spaces can make a difference.
Protect Those Around You if You Catch It
Even with the best precautions, sometimes illness strikes. If you do catch flu or Covid, there are simple ways to protect others:
Stay home: Avoid group events, work, and unnecessary outings. This is imperative not only to protect your family and fellow UKSN members, but also to avoid overwhelming the NHS, especially with cases on the rise.
Cover your coughs and sneezes: Use tissues or your elbow to reduce airborne droplets. Dispose of tissues immediately and wash your hands.
Keep shared spaces clean: Regularly wipe down surfaces like door handles, phones, and kitchen areas.
Wear a face covering if needed: In enclosed spaces, a mask can help reduce the spread to others, especially those who are vulnerable.
Keep Covid tests handy: Rapid lateral flow tests are a quick and easy way to check if you are infectious. Test if you develop symptoms or before attending a UKSN event to protect fellow members.
Encourage others to monitor symptoms: If someone you live with shows signs of illness, prompt action reduces transmission.
Stay Prepared, Stay Safe & Avoid the Flu
Being prepared isn’t just about your gear and skills - it’s about keeping yourself and those close to you healthy. By taking precautions, you protect your own wellbeing, your loved ones, and the wider community, helping prevent unnecessary pressure on the NHS during a busy winter season.
