Using Six (6) NiMh AA cells will provide 7.2V to the radio. If you install 6 AA Alkaline or Zinc Carbon cells, it will provide 9V which could potentially damaged the radio.

If you must use Alkaline or Zinc Carbon cells, use five of them and a dummy AA, which will lower the output voltage to a safe 7.5V.
