What is Water Filtration and why is it important?
Water filtration is the process of 'cleaning' water using a porous material to remove organic and inorganic compounds, particles, chemicals, bacteria, protozoa and in some instances viruses that are suspended in water. Water filtration and purification methods have been used for thousands of years to varying degrees of success. Today there are hundreds of products on the market, each claiming to be the best. To save you time and hopefully stop you getting ill from drinking contaminated water we have compiled the very best - tried and trusted portable filtration systems available.
Just be aware that filtering water will not remove most man made chemicals or salt from sea water. To remove these we advise using a method of desalination / condensation such as building and using a simple solar still.
We highly recommend that everyone has a Lifesaver as part of their outdoor / survival arsenal. Being able to purify water to 15nm allows you drink even the most polluted water.
The Lifesaver Bottle comes highly recommended by the UKSN team and holds our highest Platinum Award.
A budget water filter that can filter upto 4000 litres at 200nm. Perfect for those on a very low budget or as a backup. We advise this filter is only used in water that is known to be relatively safe although the manufacturers claim a minimum 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria, 99.9% of waterborne protozoan parasites are filtered.
The Lifestraw is a very compact filter that is ideal as a backup or for those on a tight budget.
