This week you have 2 challenges to complete!
Being able to use lashing allows you to build a whole array of things including an A-Frame shelter (which we look at in another challenge later this week). This particular lashing is called a Diagonal Lashing.
You need to lash together two diagonal poles to build your shelter.
- Rope or string
- 2 poles
Instructions Step1: Begin with a timber or clove hitch around both poles to bring the poles together. Step 2: Wrap 3-4 turns around the two poles in one axis (figure 1). Step 3: make 3-4 turns, this time over the center hitch (figure 2). Step 4: Tighten the turns by applying 3 frapping turns (wrapping the the rope around the lashing at right angles)between the poles, pulling each turn tightly (figure 3). Step 5: Finish the lashing with a clove hitch (figure 4).
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
Your fishing for your next meal when suddenly the hook snags and are forced to cut your line. After checking your kit you realise that was the last one...Not to worry, we can just make one!
- Drinks can 'ring pull'
Step 1: Scavenge a discarded ring pull from a drinks can.
Step 2: Cut the lines as shown on the diagram above. if you don't have a pair of snips - use whatever tools you have available. You can also try to fracture the metal by bending it back and forth!
Step 3: Remove the excess material and fold your hook as shown in the image above.
Did You Know?
If you want to try something a little different you can actually create a hook from a thorn!
