Peru's Sabancaya volcano, which is located less than 50 miles from the country's second city, Arequipa, has begun erupting, sending a column of ash more than two miles into the air. The latest phase of eruptive activity follows reports of explosions at the volcano averaging 23 per day between August 6 and 12, as well as earthquakes and high levels of toxic sulphur dioxide gas. Last night, at 12:19 AM Central Daylight Time, numerous eyewitnesses in the SouthEast reported seeing a very bright fireball, which was also detected by all six NASA meteor cameras in the region. Analysis of the data indicates that the meteor was first seen at an altitude of 58 miles above Turkeytown, Alabama (northeast of Gadsden), moving west of north at 53,700 miles per hour. It fragmented some 18 miles above the small town of Grove Oak. Early results indicate the fireball, which was at least 40 times as bright as the Full Moon, was caused by a small asteroid 6 feet (2 meters) in diameter. ...

Heavy downpours and thunderstorms hit the GTA, causing flooding in some areas after Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Friday afternoon. GO Transit is asking commuters heading to Union Station to give themselves extra time as a result of flooding in the area. The TTC says there is no service on Line 3 (Scarborough RT) due to flooding. Shuttle buses will be available for commuters. The TTC also says there are major delays between Long Branch Loop and Humber Loop because of the flooding. A storage tank leaked a few hundred gallons of a flammable liquid at the Port of Long Beach early Friday morning, forcing the closure of a shipping terminal and sickening several people. The chemical did not reach the water, authorities said. The leak of 250 to 300 gallons of dicyclopentadiene, a chemical found in resin, ink and adhesives, was reported about 12:30 a.m. at Pier T, which is operated by Total Terminals International, said port spokesman Eric Bradley. Authorities responded to a plane crash Friday in northwest Oklahoma. Vance Air Force Base confirmed that at approximately 1:48 p.m. Aug. 17 a T-38 Talon stationed at the base crashed while on a training mission near Mutual. An instructor pilot was on board during the mission and ejected prior to the crash. The pilot remained conscious and was treated by emergency responders. The aircraft is a total loss, per a release.
